Whether overcooked or undercooked, it's hard to get pasta just right! For tips on how to cook pasta the right way, we look to the experts at Eataly Chicago.
Cook your own pasta with these tips:
- Boiling water: Add salt to the water. Do not add olive oil to the water.
- Cooking pasta: The best way to know if your pasta is cooked to perfection is by tasting it. Fresh pasta takes approximately 4-5 minutes to cook. Dry pasta takes approximately 8-18 minutes to cook. Look to the package instructions for timing.
- Straining pasta: Strain your pasta, but never rinse it. You want to use the starch from the pasta to help thicken the pasta sauce.
- Selecting sauce: Picking out a sauce is dependent upon the shape of the pasta selected. For thicker pasta shapes such as rigatoni or penne, choose a chunkier sauce like a bolognese. For thinner pasta shapes such as spaghetti, choose a thinner sauce such as a pomodoro.
