Sky News Darwin bureau chief Matt Cunningham discusses the devastating impact of Cyclone Tracy on Darwin in 1974 ahead of a special Sky News investigation marking the 50th anniversary of one of Australia’s worst natural disasters.
The cyclone destroyed 80 per cent of the city’s buildings and killed 66 people, with many others injured.
“The damage to the infrastructure was just phenomenal, and as part of this documentary, we’ve spoken to people, survivors who sheltered during Cyclone Tracy, we’ve heard their stories,” Mr Cunningham told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
“We’ve also heard the stories of those tasked with the evacuation of Cyclone Tracy, which was an incredible feat in itself and then the reconstruction of Darwin after Cyclone Tracy … it is an incredible story.”
