Hi,
This is about Tyler Larson / Music Is Win's "The Best Beginner Guitar Course Ever". If you've ever see anything of the man you'll know he leans heavily on hyperbole, rather than this being an arrogant statement.
I hope.
I saw this at a discounted rate of 80%, meaning $10 down from $50 so picked it up (and some others).
Now my perspective is as a someone who has had a guitar for a long time but wanted to start again. I hoped this would let me cover all the a bases and assist in my practise.
So what does it cover?
There's four main sections.
Section: 1 is made up of six lessons and is called "Before You Play, You Must Understand"
Here we're really going back to the start - as if you've never even picked up an instrument. I do question how useful this can be to anyone, as anyone with an interest will have worked out a lot of these things.
You'll be shown (slowly) around the guitar, how to change strings and tune. The how to hold the guitar and pick (both of those things are subject to debate). The section on hand stretches is probably the most overlooked and useful part here.
1. Introduction & the Parts of Your Guitar
2. How to Change Your Strings
3. How to Tune Your Guitar
4. How to Hold Your Guitar, Guitar Pick, and Stretch
5. How to Hold a Guitar Pick
6. Essential Hand Stretches
Section: 2 contains lessons 7 and 8. The first being how to read guitar tab and the second, at last, some single note melodies to put everything so far into practise.
"Key Concepts". Does anyone actually need to be told how to read tab? I guess they might.
7. How to Read Tablature
8. Single Note Melodies to Build Finger Strength
Section: 3 is 7 parts and where all the stuff you've been clamouring for is hiding.
"Playing Examples, Exercises, and Techniques"
Here you'll be introduced to some chords and strumming patterns with some follow along videos to solidify things.
9. Chords and Chord Technique
10. Essential Strumming Patterns
11. More Chords and Effective Chord Switching
12. Chord Switching Practice
13. Power Chords
14. Muting
15. Put It All Together!
Section 4, Supplemental Materials, isn't really a section but a PDF of a chord chart. Hurrah.
It's SO short.
Delivery is dry and less than engaging.
Must of this can be had for free on YouTube in a more entertaining format.
I think there should be more practise material, like another 10 or so tracks to strum and pick along with. Something to really involve you and you can return to easily.
Is it worth $50? Absolutely not, but it is probably worth $10.
I'm going to start Guitar Super System Level 1, which in itself has so much more content at the same price. Let's hope I'm not swamped.
I hope this review was helpful to you. On this channel I will be reviewing more things and attempting to learn songs and guitar technique in my learning to be a guitarist.
