You can learn to write academically and overcome the imposter syndrome that crushes your attempts to write like an academic. Confident academic writing – the type that impresses examiners - comes with practice.
We all struggle with academic writing at some point in our college and university lives. If you’ve ever said, “I’m not an academic person”, “I can’t write like an academic”, or “I’ll never grasp the academic writing style”, you just need to learn a few tips and tricks to find your unique academic voice. Then practice, practice, practice!
In this video, we’ll explore the three key fundamentals of academic writing.
Firstly, you need to communicate your understanding of the topic. Experienced academic writers convey their familiarity and confidence with their topic. They use terms like, “put simply”, and “in other words” to ensure their audience is on the same page as them.
Secondly, you need to know what you’re doing when it comes to critical analysis. Your academic writing needs to describe, interpret and evaluate the material you’re working with.
Thirdly, you need to make your own contribution to the debate through your academic writing. This is the toughest part. It involves listening to your own academic voice, then incorporating that into your writing. Once you find your academic voice, there will be no stopping you, and your writing will improve exponentially!
