Jimmy Carter, the longest-living U.S. president, has died at the age of 100. Serving as the 39th president from 1977 to 1981, he is even better known for his humanitarian work after he left the White House.
The former president was a controversial figure in Taiwan for his decision to end diplomatic ties with the Republic of China (Taiwan) in favor of the People's Republic of China in 1979. That same year, Carter signed into law the Taiwan Relations Act, the basis for the unofficial U.S.-Taiwan relationship and ongoing cooperation as democratic partners.
