'I wonder when Sydney will deign to give you and me orders? Perhaps in 100 years they’ll pay fabulous prices for us darling and we’ll smile down upon ’em from above!'
ANNE DANGAR TO GRACE CROWLEY, 1951
Anne Dangar (1885–1951) was one of Australia’s most important modern artists. During the first decades of the twentieth century, Dangar was one of the few Australian artists to engage directly with advancements in European modernism and developed a lifelong commitment to Cubism.
Join Rebecca Edwards, Curator, Australian Art, as she explores Dangar’s fascinating life, bold Cubist practice and her significant contribution to both Australian and French modern art.
The first survey of Dangar’s work in Australia, the National Gallery of Australia’s exhibition is a unique opportunity to see the breadth of Dangar’s practice from painting to traditional French pottery decorated with bold abstract designs.
Anne Dangar is on display from 7 Dec 2024–27 Apr 2025.
Ethel Carrick | Anne Dangar is a Know My Name project, the National Gallery initiative celebrating the work of all women artists to enhance understanding of their contribution to Australia’s cultural life.
