In this masterclass, Professor Clive Greensmith works with Quatuor Magenta on nuances and exaggeration of musical ideas in the first movement of Debussy’s String Quartet. He begins with a brief historical overview of the piece that helps illuminate how to approach musical decision-making in it. He encourages the ensemble to bring out the details in the piece and be confident and clear in their musical ideas. He offers them several suggestions for how to use technical aspects such as bow stroke and distribution, vibrato, and articulation to bring out the contrast in the music and highlight the distinct characters of the different sections. Greensmith also helps the group maintain a sense of underlying energy and urgency throughout the work so that it always stays exciting, even in quiet or calm sections. Overall, he helps each player gain a better understanding of their individual roles, such as when they must lead and when they must support. He also teaches the ensemble how to create more tension and release, how to play with a strong group resonance, and how to react to and balance with one another to give an engaging and exciting performance.
What we learn:
- The historical context of the piece and how that influences the music.
- Having the appropriate ensemble balance and cohesion.
- Bringing out contrast, especially through sound color and dynamics.
- Showing different characters in each new section.
- How to use the bow to achieve the desired musical effects.
- Maintaining energy throughout, no matter the dynamic or mood.
