- Global Warming seen at Ilulissat Icefjord of Greenland in the Arctic -
Global warming: Ilulissat Icefjord: Sermeq Kujalleq glacier: Greenland: The Ilulissat Icefjord of Greenland in the Arctic. Registered as World Heritage Site. 81% of Greenland's surface is covered by ice up to a maximum depth of 3,000m. Here, the ice cap reaches the sea. The Sermeq Kujalleq glacier of the Ilulissat Icefjord has been retreating due to global warming since the early 20th century, accelerating in recent years. It retreated 15km in the decade from 1996-2005. NASA and others estimate the glacier released 500,000 cubic metres into the sea in that period.
