The JHMCS is a helmet-mounted display system that allows the pilot to see targeting information and other data projected onto the inside of the helmet visor. This information can be updated in real time, allowing the pilot to track targets and aim weapons without having to look away from the outside world.
This helmet system has been consistently deleted from planned F-22 upgrades over the years for various reasons, mostly budgetary, but also due to the size of the helmet hampering pilot movements under the F-22 canopy.
Despite these challenges, the F-22 Raptor fleet has been upgraded to use the AIM-9X Sidewinder, a significant upgrade over what the AIM-9M had to offer. However, even with this new capability, F-22 pilots still lack a helmet-mounted display (HMD) to take advantage of the missile’s high-off boresight (HOBS) abilities. There doesn’t seem to be much talk about fixing this long-standing deficiency in the near term.
