THREE SEMLA’S TO TRY IN STOCKHOLM
My weekly semla reel is back and this time we have a really good one in the lineup. I went to two places in Södermalm that were both recommended by you and I must say that they were really good choices. I do have a favorite though and it might be one of the best semla’s I’ve had in my life so far!
FEATURED SEMLA’S
1. The Matcha semla at Lindquists Bakery
Lindquists is one of the unofficial kings of crazy semla’s in Stockholm. They sell about ten different versions of it and new ones keep popping up. Two of my staple favorites are the Red Velvet Semla and the Salted Caramel semla/popcorn semla but I try to always go for new things to make it more fun. This time I had the brand new matcha semla. It looked really cool with the deep green shade, and it’s perfect if you have more mature tastebuds and enjoy matcha. I wouldn’t say that it does very good as a semla though. It’s tasty, but it’s not because of the matcha flavor. I would actually prefer a regular semla to this one. It gets a 3/5.
2. The Lyxsemla at Gunnarsons Specialkonditori
This spot was recommended to me from one of you and I didn’t even know this place existed before. I’ve really been missing out though because they have so much delicious pastries and cakes and there is literally so much to choose from. It’s a very traditional style Swedish Bakery, so it’s perfect if you’re looking for an authentic semla. It tastes like semla’s used to do with a really soft bun, a soft almond mass flavor and a LOT of soft whipped cream with an extremely high fat percentage. For me, this one is a gamechanger cause it’s the best I’ve had in a really long time and it’s unlike most other semla’s in Stockholm since it’s a lot more old school in terms of style. It gets a 5/5.
3. St Pauls Bakery/Il Caffe was recommended to visit St Paul’s Bakery for semla’s as well cause their almond mass is supposed to be amazing, but they didn’t have semla’s there but they did share the space with a place called ilcaffe which had both vegan semla’s and regular semla’s. I’m a bit confused as to whether I tried the right semla or not since the one I had was sold from il caffe (but it was also the only option there). The semla and especially the almond mass was delicious though. Very rich in terms of flavor and it definitely stood out to me as well. This one gets a 4/5.
What is your favorite semla? Let me know in the comments? Also, if you don’t eat semla, I’d love to know what your favorite pastry is!
