Durian is often referred to as the “king of fruits” and is widely popular in Southeast Asia and many other countries due to its long list of health benefits. It is distinct for both its spiky look and its strong odour, which some individuals may find unpleasant. Durian is extremely nutritious and has its unknown unique taste as well. Lets discuss some of the health benefits associated with durian when it is consumed.
1. First, durian contains an impressive list of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients. It contains good amounts of vitamin C, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin and vitamin A. It also contains important minerals such as iron, calcium, zinc and magnesium, as well as phytonutrients, protein and beneficial dietary fats.
2. Durian also has digestive benefits when consumed. This is due to its high levels of dietary fiber, which is essential for our digestive system and its proper functioning. This fibre will help promote bowel movements and reduce conditions such as constipation, bloating and indigestion. Since most of the fibre in durian is insoluble fibre, it can also lower the frequency of diarrhea.
3. Durian is also great for our overall bone health. This is because durian is a great source of bone healthy nutrients such as magnesium, manganese, copper and potassium. These nutrients play a vital and integral role in both developing and sustaining bone durability and strength. As well, they can also help prevent unwanted bone conditions such as osteoporosis when consumed on a consistent basis.
4. They can also help promote our cardiovascular health and healthy blood pressure. Durian is rich in potassium, which helps to balance both salt and fluid throughout the cells of our body. Potassium also helps the blood vessels to relax, which reduce the overall stress on our cardiovascular system and reduces the risk of developing conditions such as atherosclerosis and strokes. At the same time, this potassium can even help to boost cognitive function and memory.
5. Durian contains tryptophan, which can be beneficial for those individuals suffering from insomnia. When tryptophan is added to our diet and consumed, it is converted to serotonin, which may help to increase feelings of relaxation. This serotonin can then help release melatonin into the body, causing us to feel more tired and helping with sleep. Having a few pieces of durian prior to sleep could help with insomnia. Also discuss with your medical practitioner if you are dealing with this unwanted condition for further treatment.
6. It can also help with the proper production of red blood cells in the body. This is because durian contains many different nutrients which are essential for the production of red blood cells, such as folic acid, iron and copper. This can help to reduce symptoms of anemia, as well of fatigue and indigestion.
7. Lastly, durian is a great anti-aging fruit and help been regarded as a food to help reduce aging. This is one of the main reasons why it is called the “king of fruits”. Durian contains a wide variety of antioxidant properties which can help to reduce free radicals in the body. This can then help reduce the chances of premature aging and delay the appearance of wrinkles and age spots, as well as macular degeneration.
