I want to show all of you something pretty special today. I have here a copy of the self-published edition of Eragon. Now these are pretty rare because, A, we didn’t print that many of them, at least no compared with, say, the Random House edition of Eragon. But also because they’re all paperbacks and paperbacks don’t last too well. But, I have an absolutely pristine copy of the self-published Eragon here.

I love this book, not only because of what it meant to our family, but I still like the cover. I think it’s, well, I think it’s eye-catching, for one thing. And we designed it to grab people’s attention from thirty feet away in a bookstore. I drew the art—I drew the eye. My sister put the color in for the iris of the eye and then my dad was the one actually who did the layout and the design of the book.

So as you can see, this is the book. We had blurbs on the back and a horrible self-portrait of mine that I did in about five minutes. And we have very, very small type inside because we were trying to save space. So the self-published edition is about fifteen thousand words longer than the Random House edition. We tightened up a lot of traveling during editing.

And I also want to show you another version. Now this, this is an edition of Eragon that we gave to our local library. And after they’d had it for a while, I went to them and said, “I’d love to give you a new edition because all the copies of Eragon that I see are new, and I’d like to see one that actually looks like it’s been read and loved.” And as you can see, this has been beat up a bit and scuffed, and it’s definitely been well-used by the reader. So I also keep this on my shelf, just as a reminder that people actually do read my books on occasion.

Now there are some differences between this and…this edition. We had a couple of different printings, so the type’s a little tighter on the title, and things like that.

But I really am proud of this. It’s still a beautiful cover, I think. And, actually, quite valuable at the moment. Collectors have really gone after these. I don’t know the exact prices, but they’ve gone for thousands and thousands of dollars. So anyway, that’s the self-published edition of Eragon.
