On March 21, 2023, the BJP intensified its criticism of Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Congress, by dubbing him a "modern-day Mir Jafar," a reference to a person who sought support from overseas to conduct political battles in India. The reference was to the Nawab of Bengal, who was placed as ruler of Bengal and, in exchange for betraying the then-Nawab of Bengal, Siraj-ud-Daulah, at the Battle of Plassey in 1757 with the British, made significant commercial concessions to the British.
