The Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty represent Joseon's unique burial culture. The tombs of the kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty show the ideology, political history, and artistic viewpoints of the time in a condensed way. The spatial composition and architecture of the stone structures show the unique artistry of the Joseon Dynasty. Along with Salleung dogam uigwe, which is an archive of rituals related to Joseon's royal tombs, the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty are a precious global cultural heritage at which ancestral rituals have been performed for more than 500 years. Based on such a background, forty royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, i.e. excluding the two royal tombs in North Korea, were designated as a UNESCO World Heritage in 2009.
