Struggling for Survival in Paradise - Iguanas in the Caribbean (1993)
This video documents the rediscovery of the Jamaican iguana (Cyclura collei), believed to have been extinct since 1948. It is astonishing that this large, 4 feet long lizard (130 cm) remained undiscovered only 20 Kilometres away from the University of the West Indies in Kingston until Edwin Dafus, a wild boar hunter, rediscovered it in 1990.
I still remember the day Dr. Peter Vogel and I, got the message from Rhema Kerr (Hope Zoo). We were at Discover Bay Marine Laboratory and engaged in a research project in Windsor, Trelawny (Cockpit Country).
Dr. In 1990 Peter Vogel initiated a research project to save the few surviving specimens of the Jamaican Iguana from extinction.
Vogel was murdered in his Kingston home in 2007.
