Title: Understanding the Role of Machine Learning in Signed Language Recognition
Abstract: There have been many attempts in the past to properly capture signed language data using computers. Many approaches are flawed due to fundamental misunderstandings of the underlying linguistics or lack of understanding about deaf culture and language, while other approaches have been held back by limitations of technology. This talk will outline what components are needed for a system to properly capture signed language data and explore how a range of solutions within ML can be utilised to achieve this task.
