Transfer Bench or Bath Seat, Which is Best?
We often hear stories from people checking in on their elderly parents and finding that their parents are not bathing very often because they fear falling. It doesn’t have to be this way!
A simple way to help reduce the risk is to make a small investment in the right bath seat or transfer bench! So which one do you choose?
To begin, we need to understand why either of these products is so important.
According to the CDC, there are over 200,000 non-fatal bathroom injuries are recorded in the U.S. each year. These injury rates tend to increase with age and the location in a bathroom. They particularly increase in and around the shower and bathtub area.
Since we tend to use the bathroom daily, the CDC numbers suggest that an accident is inevitable or at least increases as you age. And the older you get the more serious the injury can become.
Both products provide the necessary assistance and support to anyone who feels as if they cannot stand safely or alone in a shower or bathtub. Although commonly associated with the elderly, these safety aids can be used by people of all ages including:
• The Elderly
• Those recovering from a back injury
• Those who are recovering from broken bones (legs, ankles, knee injuries)
• Those who are in casts and who use crutches
• Those with long-term disabilities
A Transfer bench is used by people who have trouble getting over the tub wall or into the shower, either because of illness, disability, or age.. The user sits on the bench, which straddles the side of the tub, and gradually slides from the outside to the inside of the tub. A Transfer bench consists of one armrest, backrest, wide seat, and four legs, two of which have suction cups. The suction cup legs stay inside the tub while the other two legs stay on the outside of the tub.
A Transfer Bench is not just about being comfortable while in the bathroom, it is also about being able to safely get in and out of the bathtub without risking a fall. A Shower or Bath chair is lightweight and has a narrower seat and legs than a transfer bench. It sits completely inside of a bathtub or shower, unlike a transfer bench. A shower chair is designed to provide comfort and stability once you are inside the shower or tub.
So if you are worried about losing your balance getting your legs over the bathtub wall or need assistance getting into a bathtub then a Transfer Bench is right for you.
This can include the elderly, or even someone younger with a disability or recover from an injury or surgery.
A transfer bench can also be ideal if you need to keep a cast dry by allowing you to rest your leg on the bench outside of the tub. If you are comfortable with your balance getting into a bathtub, but want the extra stability and less risk of slipping and falling then a bath seat is a product for you. Keep in mind that a transfer bench takes up more space than a bath seat. So if your bathroom is small and doesn’t allow for part of the bench to be outside of the tub, then a bath seat with a tub rail and grab bars installed would be an alternative.
