Pre-Wedding Ritual Mangalorean ROCE Ceremony
"Roce" (Coconut Milk ) is a traditional ceremony held in Mangalore 1 or 2 days prior to the Mangalorean Catholic Wedding. Roce is a Konkani word that symbolizes purity, just like the white milky fluid that flows out, while grinding a coconut. The event signifies a shift or change from bachelor/spinster hood to married life. It is applied on the groom and the bride right from the crown of his/her head to the sole of his/her feet, while chanting some short verses known as vovyo's in konkani. This ceremony is usually held at the boy's/girl's residence, if the place can accommodate a large number of guests. Close friends, neighbours and relatives have wholesome fun and entertainment during this event. In earlier days people from the neighbourhood used to contribute fruits, vegetables,grocery items and animals from their farm, to support the boys/girls family in making this function a grand success. Later on this family would slowly repay each one of them, whenever a similar function would take place in their family. People remember those old traditions even now by organizing a procession known as the "Vojem" ) Ceremony. Now caterers have cropped up in every nook and corner of Mangalore (including the remote areas) to serve food of your choice, unlike earlier days where everything used to be prepared by the people themselves, in a huge outdoor kitchen (known as roso) set up specially for this occasion….
