Block Island bustles with tourists during the summer, but the so-called “shoulder seasons” of spring and fall are a different story. During these periods, the island is less crowded, the weather is often superb, and there is still plenty to do and see, as ENE discovers on a June trip. Join host Tom Richardson as he paddles, fishes, hikes, and bikes around Block Island with a variety of local experts, and learns why the quieter shoulder seasons can be the best times to plan a trip to this beautiful island off the Rhode Island coast.
On tap in this episode is bike riding the scenic coastal roads on a self-guided tour, which takes riders to Southeast Light, Rodmans Hollow, Monhegan Bluffs, the historic Spring House, downtown New Shoreham, and more. We also discover Fresh Pond, the largest freshwater pond on Block Island and part of the extensive Greenway Trail network. Later, we kayak the Great Salt Pond with Pond & Beyond Kayak and see all sorts of birdlife, including great blue herons, egrets, and oystercatchers. Wrapping things up is an exciting fishing trip aboard the charter boat Harley, where we catch a variety of good-eating, hard-fighting species, including striped bass, bluefish, and black sea bass.
