Calcium carbonate or marble chips reacts with hydrochloric acid to form water, calcium chloride salt and carbon dioxide gas. The smaller the size of the calcium carbonate particles, the larger their overall surface area. The larger the surface area the more contact exists between reactants and the faster the reaction occurs.
