It’s quite a challenge when you’re invited to speak on a booth during a medical congress. There’s no fixed program, no timetable and the doctor’s just walk by the stand, generally in search of good coffee and something to eat.
So, you start your presentation with one or two doctors who are just sitting there, often for a rest. How does the magic operate, what’s the secret recipe?
You obviously need an interesting subject, but that’s not enough. You need to be your natural self. Start with a “hook” that will answer their “what’s in it for me” question, at the same time implement a combination of eye contact, a smile, with your voice transmitting enthusiasm and passion for your subject (without overdoing it) enhancing your performance with good body language that’s linked to what you’re saying (there are 5 families of gestures you need to be aware of). If you can add to that, a touch of humour, there’s a good chance that you’ll be perceived as being authentic, natural and engaging..
and, you must REHEARSE! Always keep in mind..if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail…
