COLUMBUS CITY COUNCIL MEETING HIGHLIGHTS:
CAP CITY MARATHON: Council President Zach Klein is supporting an ordinance to enter into contract with the Greater Columbus Sports Commission for the Cap City Marathon. Administration Committee Chair, Elizabeth Brown, is presenting ordinance 0767-2016, which provides $75,000.00 to the Commission for this year’s 13th anniversary event. Organizers anticipate that more than 14,000 runners and walkers will participate. Additionally, the event partners with the Department of Recreation and Parks to create the “Be a Champion” youth training program, designed to encourage youth fitness in Columbus.
NEW ROAD: Chair of the Public Service Committee, Shannon Hardin is supporting ordinance 0862-2016, which authorizes the Director of Public Service to enter into a contract with Shelly and Sands, Inc. for $7,805,451.82 for the construction of the Arterial Street Rehabilitation - Hamilton Road Phase B (S Curve) project. The work consists of creating a new North Hamilton Road corridor from a point along the existing corridor approximately 450’ north of Menerey Lane/Preserve Boulevard to East DublinGranville Road aligning it with North Hamilton Road from East Dublin-Granville to SR-161.
ENHANCING EDUCATION: Councilmember Michael Stinziano is supporting ordinance 0627-2016, which authorizes the Director of Public Utilities to enter into a grant agreement with the Grange Insurance Audubon Center (GIAC) for the development of STEM curriculum that integrates with its interactive Storm water exhibits. The goal of the curriculum is to engage students in analyzing the current environment and infrastructure and create improved systems for storm water management.
WOMAN OF ACHIEVEMENT: Councilmember Mitchell J. Brown is presenting Chief of Police Kim Jacobs with a resolution for being named a YWCA Woman of Achievement for 2016. As the first woman and open LGBT community member to serve as Chief of Police in Columbus, Chief Jacobs has been a catalyst for initiatives such as the Division’s Citizen Police Academy, implementation of a separate Domestic Violence reporting and reorganizing of Internal Affairs to investigate all citizen complaints.
CREATE COLUMBUS GRANTS: Councilmember Elizabeth Brown, Chair of the Economic Development Committee, is sponsoring ordinance 0844-2016 to enter into an agreement with United Way of Central Ohio and the Columbus Foundation to support the Create Columbus Young Professionals Grants Programming. The program encourages and supports residents launching innovative, community based initiatives with a young professionals omponent. Each applicant can request a grant for any amount
up to $10,000.
COAAA: Councilmember Jaiza Page, Chair of the Recreation and Parks Committee, is sponsoring ordinance 0373-2016 to transfer matching funds to pay employee salaries at the Central Ohio Area
Agency on Aging (COAAA). COAAA plans, funds and develops services that make our communities places where individuals can live with independence and dignity. It also coordinates and arranges services for more than 8,000 individuals who participate in community based long term care programs including PASSPORT, MyCare Ohio, the Ohio Home Care Waiver and the Franklin County Senior Options Program.
COMMUNITY CRIME PATROL: Council President Zach Klein is co-sponsoring an ordinance, which allows the Director of the Department of Public Safety to enter into a contract with the Community Crime Patrol (CCP) to provide citizen patrol services. Public Safety Chair Mitchell J. Brown is proposing ordinance 0758-2016 for $25,000.00 to the community-based program to extend services to the Southern Gateway neighborhood beginning on June 1, 2016. To help with patrolling on the South Side, CCP is adding an additional 10 positions.
