Cnut, also known as Cnut the Great and Canute, was a powerful monarch who reigned over England, Denmark, and Norway in the early 11th century. His rule brought together these three kingdoms, forming what is now known as the North Sea Empire. Cnut was the son of the Danish king Sweyn Forkbeard, and the brother of Harald II.
Cnut ascended to the English throne in 1016, after defeating the English king Æthelred the Unready and his son Edmund II. His subsequent accession to the Danish throne in 1018 solidified his hold on England and Denmark. After overcoming challenges in Scandinavia, Cnut extended his dominion by claiming the crown of Norway in 1028, after defeating their king, Olaf Haraldsson.
He also gained influence among the Norse-Gaels in the maritime zone between Great Britain and Ireland. His victories in Norway and Sweden further bolstered his claim to be the ruler of "all England and Denmark and the Norwegians and of some of the Swedes."
