The assessment and strengthening of existing buildings require structural engineers to have a unique skillset, and with a drive to reduce construction cost and reductions in carbon emissions it is fast becoming a skillset in high demand. I will be covering the basics of how to assess existing buildings and how to strengthen them when required.
Any structural assessment of an existing structure has to start with a desktop study. This study will locate any existing structural information available as it will guide any future investigations.
The structural strengthening of a column wall or beam requires a more detailed check than you may think. The structural strengthening of any structure requires a detailed assessment of the residual stresses in the building as the higher the residual stresses the more strengthen that is required.
