Well, I’ve got my hands on both VPN providers - and in this CyberGhost vs Surshark VPN comparison, I’ll reveal every single thing that my VPN investigation uncovered. Let’s go!
------------------------------------------------------------
🔑 Privacy & Security
Both VPNs claim to have a no-logs policy and, they match on high-level encryption standards - AES-256 or ChaCha20, depending on the tunneling protocol.
I found a functional kill switch on both, as well as a Double VPN functionality - Multihop for Surfshark VPN and NoSPY for CyberGhost VPN. Though… that one costs extra. My Surfshark review revealed NoBorders and Camouflage mode to help out users in restrictive countries.
------------------------------------------------------------
🏎️ Performance
Testing in the US, Germany and Australia, CyberGhost showed me some nice download speeds for the first two, but stumbled upon Australia. Surfshark speed test results crushed CyberGhost VPN in all three locations.
------------------------------------------------------------
💎 Additional features
With CyberGhost, I got 7 simultaneous connections. Surfshark doesn’t limit the number of devices. Both VPNs have an ad-blocker. Surfshark’s CleanWeb is fully functional, but CyberGhost's ad-block feature is semi-functional at best.
CyberGhost also has a dedicated IP feature, but just like no-SPY, you gotta pay additionally for that. Surfshark has a few more features I can appreciate - like their GPS spoofing feature on Android or Data Alert functionality to check if my info has been leaked. Fellow torrenting enthusiasts will probably love the Whitelister feature just as much as I do.
------------------------------------------------------------
🎥 Torrenting & Streaming
Even without the Whitelister function, Surfshark torrenting was a breeze. Their servers are all optimized for P2P and speeds are pretty good. CyberGhost torrenting doesn’t fall too far behind. Even if not all of their servers are optimized for P2P, they have specialized ones.
CyberGhost VPN Netflix capabilities are pretty good, it actually handled BBC iPlayer as well, but didn’t get through to Dazn. Surfshark didn’t though, it worked with Dazn, unlocked HBO Now, and BBC iPlayer too, of course, I checked out the British Office on there. As for Netflix libraries, Surfshark covers around 30 of them.
------------------------------------------------------------
🔦 Apps & ease of use
No complaints for mobile apps - CyberGhost vs Surfshark matchup is equal here - both offer nice user interfaces, super easy to understand. Windows versions are also similar, while macOS versions are equally okay. For Linux users, Surfshark has a graphic app for Ubuntu.
------------------------------------------------------------
Final thoughts ➡️
To conclude this Surfshark and CyberGhost review - let’s count the points. Surfshark takes a win in the privacy and security area, leads in performance, and crushes the price to value ratio. We got two draws - one when only looking at pricing and the second for their applications. That’s a bit of bad news for CyberGhost - but hey, there’s always room to improve.
