2010 Faculty Innovator Awards: Dr. Sucheston is a 30-year retiree of The Ohio State University, College of Medicine where she served as a professor of anatomy. Upon her retirement from OSU, Dr. Sucheston joined the faculty at Columbus State Community College, where she continued to pursue her first love of the instruction of anatomy. Over the 10 years she has been at Columbus State, Dr. Sucheston has made a multitude of improvements in the instruction of anatomy, including moving the program to an entirely cadaver-based anatomy program that teaches anatomy from a regional perspective. Her anatomy program at CSCC is well-respected by all of the state medical schools. She was fundamental in having the community college courses transfer to the Ohio State University and further works closely with Ohio University in the instruction of anatomy.
When Dr. Sucheston first realized that the commercial market did not have good resources for regional anatomy at the undergraduate level, she developed her own materials for that instruction. She authored an undergraduate regional anatomy laboratory manual as well as many study aids for students. Her crowning achievement, a video guide to human anatomy, can be viewed online here. Over the course of five years, Dr. Sucheston shot, edited and reshot hours of film that can be viewed by all CSCC students enrolled in anatomy via podcasting and the course site. More than 3,000 CSCC students annually benefit from her efforts, with 15,000 students benefitting over the past five years. Dr. Sucheston's efforts replace a commercial product that cost $20 per CD per student. Thus, she currently saves Columbus State Community College students $60,000 per year, and has over time saved students more than $300,000. Dr. Sucheston's work is professional in its design and function and has saved students countless hours in the study of anatomy. The video also has been instrumental in the launching of CSCC's hybrid/distance learning anatomy course, which serves students throughout the state.
