Tourists usually make the rounds of Istanbul's fabulous sights during the daytime like us in the past. Istanbul at night is an completely different story as we discovered on the approach to the Blue Mosque through Sultanahmet Park.
The Blue Mosque was a jaw-dropper with lit-up minarets and dome glowing against the rapidly darkening sky. Immense crowds sitting in the grass, on any available bench, walking, selling, all waiting for the call to prayer before eating. It was Ramadan that had begun on August 11, 2010 and continued for 30 days until September 9 which is when we visited Turkey.
Debatable whether we could even enter the Blue Mosque since Travels With Sheila didn't have a head covering but no worries. Scarves are handed out at security for women to cover their heads and plastic bags to put shoes in. Either leave shoes outside in a box or carry around the most exquisite Blue Mosque.
Both the inside and outside of the Blue Mosque is really beyond my descriptive power. I think more so at night than during the day. A big "must see" in Istanbul.
