Jonathan Michael Lovitz (/ˈlʌvɪts/; born July 21, 1957) is an American actor and comedian. Lovitz is best known for his tenure as a cast member on the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 1985 to 1990. Outside of SNL, he starred as Jay Sherman in The Critic and played a baseball scout in A League of Their Own. He has appeared in 20 episodes of The Simpsons.
Lovitz was born in Tarzana, California, to Jewish parents. He attended the University of California, Irvine, where he studied theater. After graduating, he moved to New York City to pursue a career in comedy. In 1985, he was hired as a cast member on Saturday Night Live. He remained on the show for five seasons, during which time he created and performed a number of memorable characters, including Tommy Flanagan, the Pathological Liar, and Master Thespian.
After leaving Saturday Night Live, Lovitz continued to work in television and film. He starred in the sitcom The Critic from 1994 to 1995, and he had a recurring role on the sitcom NewsRadio from 1995 to 1999. He has also appeared in films such as A League of Their Own (1992), Billy Madison (1995), and Grown Ups (2010).
In addition to his work in television and film, Lovitz has also had a successful career as a stand-up comedian. He has released three comedy albums, and he has toured extensively throughout the United States.
Lovitz is known for his quick wit and his ability to make people laugh. He is a versatile actor and comedian who has entertained audiences for over 30 years.
