The Phoenicians were also here before the Greeks came in 734 BC to Giardini Naxos. They quickly made their way south to and founded the important city of Siracusa.The Carthaginians mostly settled in the Western part. The Romans came next. We speak to historian and Sicilian language professor Gaetano Cipolla about Sicily's first occupants and what they brought to the island.
