Balut is a popular Filipino dish of a fertilized duck or chicken egg that's been incubated and then boiled or steamed and eaten from the shell: The name "balut" comes from the traditional way it was prepared, when it was wrapped or covered inside bags during incubation. The perfect balut is incubated for 17 to 18 days while its embryo is still wrapped with a whitish covering.
