In his inaugural lecture, Des Freedman draws on his experiences as a media policy theorist and as a campaigner for media reform to reflect on the prospects for change in our communications landscape.
Against a backdrop of concentrated media power, concerted attacks on public provision and declining levels of trust in established journalism, there is a need to revitalise the policy frames that shape the performance and possibilities of media today.
The talk will consider the relationship between scholarly work and activism and map out some of the central challenges for those who want to see the media play a genuinely independent and democratic role in public life.
