How does a person become a refugee? It's rarely what you think, and it can happen to anyone.
ACROSS has been serving refugees since its beginning in 1972. In celebration of World Refugee Day, we share a brief history of ACROSS dedication to refugees and hear a moving story from 21 year-old Asia who describes her journey from living with her family in Khartoum, moving to Nuba Mountains, and then fleeing for safety in a foreign land while her parents remained behind.
Asia's story begins at 4:56 - don't miss it.
Quotes from Asia's testimony:
"That's when I was left alone and I knew what life was in a real sense."
"The worst is being in a foreign country and you have no place to run to for safety."
"That is when I smelled blood for a second time."
"It is my time now to study and to make you proud and to make you feel like you have indeed invested in a right value."
