I have been here before to get some Indonesian snacks a long time ago but I returned to do a full tour of the supermarket. It’s actually closer to a grocery store but there are just so many items and variety that I think this can be called a supermarket. They had freshly made snacks, baked goods, drinks, frozen foods, seafood, sauces, toiletries, medicine, etc.
You can literally find everything you need there but of course, it is an Indonesian grocery store. The locals told me that they carried everything they needed and it made them feel like they were home. By home, they mean back in Indonesia.
I interviewed many people but only a few made the final cut. It seemed like there were a lot of people from Surabaya and East Java. This seems to be the dominant culture that resides in the South Philly Indonesian community, at least from the people I met.
Everyone pretty much said the same thing – the food is just like home with some minor exceptions. Some of the items taste different, while some are not available due to costs. For example, the galangal “doesn’t taste the same” and the cassava leaves are replaced with kale or collard greens due to it not being imported (due to high costs).
Iwan Santoso is the owner and he gave me an in-depth tour of his grocery store (aka toko kelontong). Every inch of the space was occupied with food, drinks, snacks, rice, noodles, sauces, etc. It was a super busy day and there were so many people going in and out constantly – what a great experience! The video got long so I made a PART 2 – look for that on the next episode.
