Barry Jenkins is the writer and director of Moonlight, it follows the three life stages of Chiron, a young African-American boy trying to figure out his identity in Liberty City, a rough Miami neighborhood. It was based on the play by In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue by Tarell Alvin McCraney.
Jenkins discussed how he got involved, how the script evolved to connect to his own life story and growing up with a mother addicted to drugs. This is Barry’s second feature since the success of his indie debut, Medicine for Melancholy.
Moonlight is nominated for 8 Academy Awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay.
