Claire Frances Snyder, PhD, MHS, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Baltimore, MD, explains the benefits of including patient-reported outcomes (PROs) as part of routine clinical care. PROs allow for the amplification of the patient’s voice, which can then be used to influence their treatment. It is key to understand the steps involved to incorporate PROs in a clinical setting, such as goals, which patients to ask, which questionnaires to use, mode of delivery and deciding how best to report results for clinicians and patients. Studies have shown using PROs enables patient clinician communication. Following this, issues raised can be addressed through integration with care pathways which allows for improvement in symptoms, functioning, quality of life, satisfaction, efficiency of care and even survival. Recently, the PROTEUS Consortium released a free tool to provide a comprehensive guide of previous resources, whichallows institutions to choose multiple approaches when considering PROs. This interview took place at the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) 2023 Annual Congress in Chicago, IL.
