The German Heavy Cruiser Blücher sunk on this day April 9th 1940, dramatized in the 2016 Norwegian film "The King's choice".
One of 5 sister ships of the Admiral Hipper class. She participated in the invasion of Norway and was sunk in the Oslofjord where she was struck by coastal guns and torpedoes from the Oscarsborg Fortress. The sinking of the Blücher delayed the German troops’ advance on Oslo, giving the Royal Family and members of government the time needed to escape to safety.
Scene Description: Early on the morning of 9 April, the commander of Oscarsborg Fortress, Colonel Birger Eriksen spots the German cruiser Blücher entering Drøbak Sound. Despite having received no instructions from Oslo to engage, Eriksen considers the German ship to be hostile and gives the order to fire, and the fortress's guns and torpedo battery sink the Blücher.
