Thanks to the growing popularity of crop tops, Indian girls are no longer shy of baring their midriff. However, it is still unlikely that a curvy woman would be comfortable sporting a bikini in a swimming pool in India, let alone a public beach. All we see in the name of beachwear are one-piece and ruffled-skirted suits. As a society, we still have a long way to go before we can look at the bikini as regular beachwear rather than a titillating outfit.

In fact, recently when three Indian-origin women posted their bikini-clad picture on an image-sharing website, it was pulled down by the site, who cited it as 'objectionable content'. What made it worse was when men sent the women their nude pictures. Even other women asked the three to be ashamed of what they did.

Ragini Shane, a communications executive, says she had a similar experience when she wore a bikini on the beach. She elaborates, "I'd gone to Goa with my friends. I'd presumed that it would be fine to wear a bikini there. But, I was dismayed when apart from men, even women were staring at us condescendingly. In fact, some of the men were so outrageous that they actually clicked our pictures. Some of them attempted to click selfies, but thankfully, they were shooed away by the locals."

Even if you try shopping for a bikini on an Indian website, the search engine throws up the biggest inventory of lycra clothing. "The best part is that some of the bikini descriptions also read 'full coverage swimsuit'. Doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of a bikini?" asks fashion blogger Nina Jacob. She adds, "But I guess that's what Indian swimwear markets are all about. The only time an Indian woman wears a bikini is on her trips abroad, and while she unpacks everything after the trip, it is that bikini that sits back and says, 'Until next time, folks!'"
