If you suddenly do not have audio while playing a game, checking some audio options for a few apps in Desktop Mode could be the fix.

A user in the Steam Deck subreddit recently shared a tip with the community about how they recently fixed a muted audio issue. It turns out the sound had been muted while they were in Desktop Mode and for some reason it carried over into Gaming Mode as well.

So if this is something you have experienced, the first thing I recommend doing is checking all of the audio options within the Steam Deck settings area as well as the game you're trying to play. If it seems to be a widespread issue then let's go ahead and boot over into Desktop Mode.
From here, open up the Steam application, head to a game page with a trailer that has audio.
Then click the Speaker icon within the system tray of the task bar.
Now we're going to click the Application tab at the top.
And check to see if the Chromium app has been muted by accident.
If it is muted, unmute it from here and then reboot back into Gaming Mode to see if that fixes it.
There seems to be some sort of bug where apps that handle audio get muted in Desktop Mode and it carriers over into Gaming Mode.
In that same thread, another user said they had a similar issue.
The only difference was they needed to open the Moonlight application in Desktop Mode.
Unmute it from this panel.
And then reboot back into Gaming Mode.
Some people suspect this is happening when you're in Desktop Mode.
And apps are getting muted by accident when they click on the top-right corner of an app icon within the task bar while it's playing audio. You can tell the icon indicating this is rather small so it makes sense that people are not aware of its actual function.
Either way, a good rule of thumb to follow is that if it seems like you've lost audio in Gaming Mode.
And you were just recently in Desktop Mode.
Then you may have muted an app by mistake so boot back into Desktop Mode and open all of the programs you had recently used.
Then check the audio panel to see if any of them are muted by mistake.
Hopefully we see this fixed in a future update to SteamOS.
This doesn't seem to be intended behavior so I'm betting it will be fixed unless there are any technical hurdles to overcome.
