North American river otters are at home on the new American Trail at the National Zoo. Closed for 3 years for a $42 million makeover, the trail re-opened in September with great new exhibits and I shot the video on October 17, 2012. North American river otters rest, play, mate, give birth and, sometimes, find food on land - but they are also well-adjusted for water. They have oily, waterproof coats, streamlined bodies and webbed toes.
