When you think of actors who can successfully play tough guys willing to do whatever it takes to get the job done, it’s hard not to think about Charles Bronson as he’s been so good at playing this role over the years, he’s become synonymous with it in many ways. Seriously, there’s a reason casting directors continually returned to him when they needed a grizzled badass, and that’s because it wasn’t far from his real life persona.
No, before he ever got into acting Charles Bronson was born into a harsh childhood of poverty. And when he finally escaped this, he’d be thrown right into the fires of World War 2 where he served under the US Air Force. So all these experiences made it easy for him to portray the difficulties of life then when it was time for him to appear in classics like The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, The Dirty Dozen, and Once Upon a Time in the West.
Even television would feature him from time to time, as his roles in shows like The Fugitive and Gunsmoke will attest to. That said, undoubtedly the most iconic performance he ever gave came when he played the role of Paul Kersey in 1974’s Death Wish, the story of a man who decides to turn vigilant after a home invasion destroys his family. So influential would this movie be in fact, it’s still talked about today for the controversy it created upon release as to whether or not it was glorifying vigilantism.
