Christopher Young talks about making a living as a film composer. As a professor at University of Southern California, he says that 90 percent of graduates start out as composer assistants for the first few years out of college. Another option is to compose for music libraries, which will accept your music more easily than film and TV. Lastly Young says that you need to have realistic expectations and to keep in mind that building a career as a music composer is a long process. You might need to supplement your composition work with non-musical jobs until you’re able to fully sustain yourself with music.

Christopher Young is a composer and orchestrator for film and television. Much of his scoring work is for horror films, including “Hellraiser,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy’s Revenge,” “The Grudge,” and “Pet Sematary.” He has also scored award-winning dramas such as “The Hurricane,” “The Shipping News,” “Entrapment,” and “Swordfish.” Young teaches at the Thornton School of Music of the University of Southern California.
