The star of Northern Italy may just be one of Europe’s great fashion capitals: Milan. Or could it be the nearby Bergamo, a charming historic town at the foothills of the Alps? Here, we explore two of the Lombardy region's great cities. We start in Milan, home to one of the most magnificent cathedrals and the oldest shopping mall in the world: Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. We find plenty more than grand architecture and high fashion, though, and learn that Leonardo da Vinci played a crucial role in Milan’s look and feel (yes, this is also where you can see his masterpiece, The Last Supper). Then, we take a 1-hour train to the lovely Bergamo, where we explore the stunning walled Citta Alta (Upper Town) and eat our way through the town. Have you been to Bergamo or Milan? Let us know which city you prefer!
