On some piston head designs, specifically for engines with a lot of stroke, the oil ring groove runs into the wrist pin bore. When that happens, you’ll need to install an oil ring support rail. Without a support rail, there’s a good chance a scraper ring will work itself out of the groove—obviously, that’s not a good thing. Trey McFarland from RaceTec Pistons will explain exactly how these oil ring supports work and how to install them, Check it out in this Piston Tech 101 video, so you’ll be able to select and install the best pistons for your engine.
