Europes regions and cities have been active partners in the fight against climate change. Regional and local authorities play a key role not only in implementing coherent strategies and projects in order to 'green' regional economies and public facilities but also in mobilising citizens for climate protection. If provided with the right information and ideas, citizens themselves can do a lot to reduce their carbon footprint, to adopt energy efficient technologies and to change to an energy saving lifestyle.
At the special event of the Committee of the Regions at the UN Climate Conference in Copenhagen, representatives of EU institutions as well as Mayors from European and US cities will discuss how cities and regions can contribute to achieving sustainable energy targets regardless of the outcome of the international negotiations. A stronger cooperation between EU and US cities on climate protection can bring an additional added value for both sides and the Committee of the Regions is keen to facilitate this process.
