Arroyo de la Miel is located in an area halfway between the coast and the mountains. It is one of the three towns in Benalmádena municipality, together with the town center, Benalmádena Pueblo in the mountain area, and Benalmádena Costa at the coastal part of the town.

The main urban progress began in the beginning of the 20th century when the coast railway from Fuengirola, another neighboring town going to Málaga was constructed.

Thanks to the tourism boom in the 1960s, the population in the area grew and with this the transformation of the cluster of farmhouses of Arroyo de la Miel as one of the largest towns in the vicinity.
