The convertible top was having issues closing on its own. There are elastic tension bands between the top canvas and the inner headliner that attach to the metal hoop/bars.
When closing the convertible top, the tension bands help pull the metal hoop just above the back window forward.
Over time the elastic breaks down and no longer functions. Without the elastic, the bar is not pulled forward enough and gets stuck, and the top will not continue to close unless you help it.
Replacing the tension bands fixed this issue.
