The Coronavirus and Flu are both deadly viruses, but how are they at throwing down rhymes? Check 'em out in this epic rap battle!
In 1918-19 the so-called Spanish Flu (named thus because people mistakenly believed it started in Spain) infected an estimated 500 million people – one-third of the Earth’s population - and killed at least 50 million.
Modern flu pandemics are just as widespread but much less deadly. The Swine Flu (H1N1) pandemic of 2009 infected about 1.4 billion people with some 500,000 deaths.
However, the coronavirus is different from the flu in several important ways and has the potential to cause a far more serious pandemic than any in recent history. Here are some differences:
1) On average, flu victims infect one to two others, while corona victims infect two to three others. This may not seem like much, but it is the difference between steady, controlled growth and out-of-control exponential growth. See here for an explanatory video and why separation and social distancing is so important. Plus, it ends on a hopeful note.

2) The death rate of corona is higher, but epidemiologists don’t really know by how much since the total number of corona victims is rarely known due to limited testing. Also, it depends on the average age and quality of health care in a region. Still it appears to be four to ten times that of the flu in most countries. See here for details:

3) The incubation period is the time between contacting a disease and the onset of symptoms. For corona it averages more than ten days and for the flu it averages two days. People are still contagious during this period so there are far more undiagnosed “carriers” of corona.
4) The coronavirus is active on some surfaces for up to one week and can still cause infection by hand touching then face touching. The flu virus is rarely active for more than two days on any surface.
However, the worst part of this comparison is that the hospitalization rate is much higher for corona and the recovery time longer. So the danger is that our healthcare systems will become overwhelmed by a flood of very sick people. This has already happened in Italy, Spain and some places in the US. The result is that many victims will die who would otherwise survive with proper medical care.
