Did you know the UK is the second-biggest importer of Israeli dates in Europe? Major UK supermarkets like Asda, Tesco, Iceland, and Waitrose all sell dates labelled from Israel, the West Bank, and the Jordan Valley.
Tesco and Asda – along with Sainsbury’s and Morrisons – are part of the traditional “Big 4” chains in the UK, in that they hold immense market share in the grocery retail sector. According to analytics firm Kantar, as of April 2023 Tesco on its own held 26.9% of the UK grocery market share – making it the biggest supermarket chain in the country.
With Ramadan in full swing, a video (via Palestine Online) has emerged of activists taking soft action by placing "Boycott Israel" stickers on the packaging of Israel-labelled dates being sold in a Tesco store.
50% of Israeli dates are exported to Europe, where the UK, the Netherlands, France, Spain and Italy import huge quantities of the dried fruit. According to @FriendsofAlAqsafoa, in 2020 the UK imported over 3000 tonnes of dates from Israel, worth around £7.5 million. There are two peaks of date consumption: one is during New Year’s Eve and Christmas – while the other is during Ramadan.
