A major rescue operation involving more than 200 people is underway to save a man who has been trapped in Germany's deepest cave since Sunday.
The 52-year-old man sustained serious injuries to his head and torso in a rock fall at around 1:30 a.m. on Sunday while descending the 1-kilometre-deep Riesending cave in the Bavarian Alps with two companions. One climber remained with the injured man, while another made the 12-hour climb to the surface to seek help.
One doctor who managed to reach the wounded man on Monday said his injuries are too severe for him to be moved. Rescuers have planned a long, slow ascent in stages to keep the injured man in a prone position.
