In this video, I want to shed light on the IRS Fresh Start Program. Despite what many tax resolution firms claim, the Fresh Start Program is not a new or groundbreaking solution. It was introduced back in February 2011, over 13 years ago. The program was designed to help a small percentage of taxpayers—around 5%. Nowadays, it’s often used as a bait by firms desperate for business in the tax resolution industry.
Many of today's IRS agents weren't even around when the Fresh Start Program was launched, and some aren't familiar with it. It's crucial to understand that if someone is selling you the Fresh Start Program as a new and effective solution for your tax issues, they are likely misleading you. I've worked on thousands of cases during my time at the IRS, and the process for handling tax debt remains the same.
Here's the reality: if you owe the IRS, they will take a financial statement from you and decide whether to place you in currently non-collectible status, set up a payment agreement, or consider you for an offer in compromise. Your current financial situation will determine the outcome.
As a former Revenue Officer, I can quickly assess your eligibility for an offer in compromise based on your financial statement. The key takeaway is to avoid falling for the Fresh Start Program marketing ploy. Instead, hire a knowledgeable individual rather than a firm. Ensure you interview the person who will handle your case—ask for a Zoom or FaceTime meeting and discuss your case details.
